Cataracts

What is a cataract and how does it affect sight?

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear and transparent lens of the eye which lies behind the pupil. When the lens becomes cloudy from aging, disease, injury, or a birth defect, the cataract decreases the amount of light which can be focused on the retina at the back of the eye. Vision gradually becomes increasingly blurry. Cataracts also cause many people to have increased glare when driving at night or in bad weather.
