Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is laser vision correction?A: LASIK and PRK are precise, laser treatments which reshape the corneal surface by way of laser vision correction. This is performed with an excimer laser which has been thoroughly tested and clinically proven.
Q: Is LASIK covered by insurance?
A: Although most employer sponsored benefit plans do not offer benefits for elective procedures, we encourage you to ask your Benefit Manager. Financing options are available through Reliance Bank and Care Credit. Click the link below to find out more information.
Q: Is there any pain involved with LASIK?
A: Patients tell us they feel only slight discomfort, not pain during the procedure. After the procedure, most people report a slightly irritated eye for a few hours, like if you rubbed an eyelash in your eye. But pain is subjective, and when you learn more about the procedure you will form your own opinion of what to expect.
Q: Has anyone ever gone blind from a LASIK?
A: To our knowledge, there have been no reported cases of total loss of vision due to laser vision correction.
Q: Are there any side effects with LASIK?
A: As with any type of surgery, side effects and complications can occur. All potential side effects and complications will be discussed further at the time of the Laser Vision Correction consultation.
Q: Is LASIK for everyone?
A: LASIK is not necessarily for everyone. The best way to determine your candidacy is with a proper screening and thorough evaluation.
Q: I am very busy at work. What type of time commitment is needed to have LASIK?
A: This is a state-of-the-art procedure, which requires minimal time for the patient. The actual procedure lasts about 10 minutes per eye. Most patients can go back to work in one or two days. (We do require a one day post-operative visit).
Q: After the procedure what can I expect?
A: Most patients will experience slight discomfort or a sensation in the eye for the first day or two. The average patient will notice improved vision the day after surgery or soon thereafter. You will return for post-operative visits to follow your eye through the normal healing process. Vision may fluctuate over the first few weeks, and tends to stabilize within three months or so.
Q: What is an appropriate outcome? (statistics provided by International Society of Refractive Surgery)
A: For low and moderate myopia (up to about 10 diopters),
- 95% of eyes typically achieve 20/40 or better vision
- 85% of eyes achieve 20/25 or better vision.
- 1% of eyes cannot see as well with glasses after surgery as they could with glasses before surgery.
